From the Horse’s Mouth:
Essential Tips for Well Control Success

A word in your ear when it comes time to renew your IWCF Well Control Certificate at Aberdeen Drilling Schools. Listed below are a few tips to make that two-yearly set of tests a little easier to deal with when your ticket is up for renewal.

PREPARATION

When booking, ask for the ADS Pre-Course Work Pack (or if your HR/Training dept is handling the booking, ask them to request this for you). The ADS Well Control Work Pack is a set of practice exercises that enables you to do some invaluable self-study in advance of the course.

ATTITUDE

As your livelihood may depend on the outcome of Fridays test results, come to the course with a positive attitude with an objective in mind. For example, ADS offers a reward of £250 to candidates who pass the Principles & Procedures paper with 100% score. Perhaps make that your incentive!

Do not be shy or afraid to ask the instructor for help however small the problem is. That’s what we’re here for.

YOUR WELL CONTROL WEEK

If you’re a first-timer, let the instructor know and he will look out for any problems you may incur. We were all first-timers once!

Be aware of the current IWCF “rounding” rules.

During lectures, take notes on areas that you feel need greater comprehension. This will jog you to go back over these areas during a study break or during your evening study.

Ensure that you double-check all figures copied from the data sheet and put into the boxes of the kick sheet. (This is where most mistakes are generally made.)

When tackling questions, read the question; read the question again. Find out what the objective of the question is (i.e.; are they asking for a gradient, bbl/ft, psi or ppg?)

Draw a picture of the well in question and fill in relevant depths, mud weights, casing shoes, etc. A picture is worth a thousand words for thinking down-hole.!

Once you understand what the question is looking for, write down how you’re going to solve it. It may be one simple formula or several combined together.

Double-check your calculation. It’s too easy to punch a wrong number into your calculator!

Don’t stay up too late worrying if you’ve missed or forgotten something. A good night’s sleep will pay dividends on your outlook the next morning.

THE IWCF EXAM

Fill out your kick sheet and double-check twice before even looking at the first question. A large percentage of the P&P exam will come from figures calculated on your kick sheet.

Good luck!
