ADS drilling instructors act as rig-site coaches to help bridge knowledge and experience gaps of Operator, Drilling Contractor and Service Company personnel

The goal

To provide practical training on the steps the rig team can take to prevent, reduce
and manage well control incidents on the rig

The environment

This is especially important in wells with major hole challenges such as DEEPWATER and HPHT environments where operating margins are smaller and kick detection more critical

The approach

Well control issues are tackled by facilitating brief (approx 1-hr) sessions with drill crews and service hands at the end of each tour
This is supplemented by appropriate coaching sessions on the rig floor, mud logging unit, shakers etc
Drills such as stripping, well control response and fingerprinting techniques are taught in a practical sense both in and outside of the classroom
Several trips to the well site (lasting 4-5 days each) may be required to allow time to reinforce and refresh  drilling practices and provide an opportunity to assess the impact of the training

The topics

Deepwater overview to include:
....- definition
....- reduced fracture gradients
....- riser margin
....- reduced kick tolerance
....- reduced MAASP

Kick detection
Fingerprinting practices for early kick detection
Riser gas handling
Well-specific stack clearing procedures
Well control drills (including volumetric stripping)
Behaviour of gas in oil based mud
Review of lost circulation
Dealing with underground blowouts and hydrates
Well Kill methods and practices - what is different?
Balloooning/flowback and supercharging
Shallow gas mitigation and handling
Deepwater case history workshop
Sidekick modelling of dispersed kicks
Review of required rig equipment for well control

The benefits

The speed and effectiveness of rig-site training in achieving operational readiness
Reduced NPT and the subsequent reductions in stress, time and money
